BOATING Q & A

Is there a certain way to dispose of a sail?

Question: Is there a certain way to dispose of a sail?

I have an old sail i found at a foreclosed home. i got it looked at and they said it was crap, so is there a way to throw it out properly? i know the maritime lifestyle is steeped in methodologies and superstitions so I'm thinking it needs to be burned or something. its an old mainsail to a hobie 16, just throwing it in the dumpster doesnt sit with me well.

Donate it to the Goodwill. They will throw it a way.......but, you needn't worry about it.

An old sail for a hobie 16 will not have any real superstitions connected to it. you can toss it in the dumpster, or put an ad on craig's list for a "free old used hobie 16 sail ". even though the sail is in poor shape it may still have value as a sun shade, tarp or the cloth can be used for sewing projects like bags. hope this helps

One of the gear vendors on this page takes old sails and recycles them into bags, clothing, etc. You can try contacting them or another local sail recycler. They're the link called "Sea Fever Gear " at the bottom of this page: sandiegosailing.com/ sailing-gear/
