BOATING Q & A

How can my we live on a sailboat and sail the caribbean with a young child?

Question: How can my we live on a sailboat and sail the caribbean with a young child?

(Posted by: on 2010-08-24 18:03:26)

My husband and I have a dream of living on a sailboat and cruising the caribbean 6- 9 months of a year and being home in the states for the summer, however, we have a young child. We are worried about his schooling and would like to know how other families live on their boats with children. What kind of schooling is out there how they do it... Thanks so much!

Home schooling it offers great education and often with home school your child can advance in schooling faster then his peers. there is internet schools not to easy for a sailboat then there is hard copy schooling they send you lists of school work the books and all that is needed and all you do is follow the rules and guidelines and do the work. off the top of my head i can not remember any schools but do some research and make sure its accredited and accepted to colleges. and i would take a look at Captain Johns website its the best one around. boatwrights.org/ i hope he does not mind me recommending it!

I sailed with My son And many family's have there children with them. What they learn cruising and the ways of the free life could never be learned in school. Home school courses are available. But it a real chore getting the child to do it when there is so much to do and see.

There are lots of books written by "Livaboards " describing their experiences of educating the kids and life on a boat in general. Read a few to see all the pobs and bonus's before you make a choice

Sounds like a great adventure and lifestyle. You can find several books on liveaboards here, and you might even find a couple that address having children on board too. Happy sailing!
