Which uk marine vhf channels can be used for talking to other boating friends on?

Question: Which uk marine vhf channels can be used for talking to other boating friends on?

(Posted by: on 2010-08-17 10:00:08)

I am taking the RYA's vhf training course in a few weeks time and i was wondering what UK channels can i use to have a social chat with my boating friends on? Ive been told only channels 6, 8, 72 and 77 can be used to talk between friends from different boats but after searching google there was much confusion so hopefully someone on here thats done there RYA vhf course would be able to help me. Thanks in the northwest of england UK

6 and 8 are the correct boat to boat COMMUNICATION channels. there is nothing worse than trying to get a message to another boat only to find someone is already using it , talking about last weeks football, or the soaps. use the radio, send your message, and get off. Please, please don't say "Over and out " This belongs on American films but is in fact contradictory. "Over " means I await your reply, Whilst "Out " means " I am signing off and do not expect a reply. If you want to just chat with your friends, use your mobile, they work up to 12 miles out to sea

As a na example sotonwss.org.uk/ freqs/ frequencies.pdf is a list of marine frequencies in the Solent area. Recommend you get a copy of the RYA VHF Radio book for pre-course reading and later reference. Available for £3.50 including postage, (RRP £5.99) from Mustang Sailing and other companies that hold the course.
