BOATING Q & A

Do brass clutch marine transmissions require a special transmission fluid?

Question: Do brass clutch marine transmissions require a special transmission fluid?

Have a Gibson houseboat - transmission burned up and now there is a question about whether or not it was the right fluid for brass clutches?

If these had \Volvo drives you use motor oil, like what's in the engine.......not ATF or "lower unit oil " SAE 85 " etc. This is also true of Dana-drives but I haven't seen them in a while. Mercruiser and OMC take lower unit oil, but don't have cone clutches.
