Why would marine biologist drive submarines?
Does Marine Biologist drive submarines? Or if you have alot of information about marine biologists, can you please tell me everything you know about them? Cause im very curious. Im thinkin about becoming one in the future. Someone told me that they had to learn how to drive a submarine, that would be cool, but freaky at the same time. Please help me

Compression on a marine diesel engine?
I have a yanmar ysb8 engine,it has low compression, what has to be done to that engine to make it right?It was checked out my a yanmar mech. but I was not there and he didn't tell me how he came to that conclusion' there is a little black smoke when I first start it, and also if I give it to much throttle, yes it has a compression release it is in the right position, I believe it is the orig. engine 1978, it tries to start and almost does, but I am not sure how many times I should kept tring, after a half dozens tries I spray amilla second of starting and it starts. I bought a new fuel injector but the mechanics I have had down to the boat said it wouldn't make any difference

Gift idea for a Merchant Marine Chief Mate?
I have a good friend that was just promoted to chief mate on an oil tanker please don't start giving me trouble about it being an oil tanker though . I wanted to give him a gift as congratulations but am at a complete loss for what would be meaningful. I tried to get a model of the ship he is on, no luck. what is done to a 'normal' engine that makes it capable for marine use in lakes? I know that the water intake is different.....Can one convert a normal auto engine for use in a boat?
Joining Merchant Marines?
Joining the merchant marines. few questions involved with this one..... I was in the coast guard at a small boat station where i was a certified crewman on 3 different small boats 47', 41', 21' . Never long periods of time away from shore or to rough of seas. The farthest ever away from shore was 50 miles and maybe 10 foot seas in a storm. I would like to work on cargo ships or other vessels someone would recommend to work for, or other vessels that go around the world in the merchant marines. I need an STCW card. Can i get this without taking STCW course with my experience in the coast guard as a crewman? Also, any recommdations on companies to work for. Right now i'm looking here users.hal pc.org nugent company.html to find companies. I know about the local ship union and will inquire there. Any other recommendations from an experienced merchant mariner? Your help would be greatly appreciated as i've found becoming a merchant mariner is quite more intricate than first thought. Also quite expensive with cards and documents. what is life like as an ordinary seamn on most vessels? Basicaslly anything you feel like typing about this stuff is appreciated, nomatter how seemingly irrelevent, would be greatly appreciated. Is it safe to work for vessels not flagged in the U.S. if you're a U.S. citizen? ......anyone, THANKKKKKSSSSSS for your time

I am taking the RYA's vhf training course in a few weeks time and i was wondering what UK channels can i use to have a social chat with my boating friends on?Ive been told only channels 6,8,72 and 77 can be used to talk between friends from different boats but after searching google there was much confusion so hopefully someone on here thats done there RYA vhf course would be able to help me.Thanksin the northwest of england UK
