Question: How do you find boat engine information?

We purchased a 1978 Cobalt bow rider with a 305 engine. In order to order parts we need to know more information regarding the engine. The serial number only shows "Mercury " 878415 which is unknown and the outdrive only show Mercruiser 77124- S which is unknown??? Even to order a service manual you would need to know more than this. Please Help???

I would suggest purchasing a CLYMER manual covering Mercruiser stern drives from 1964 to 1985,, the book number is B740 this book has helped me in determining how to rebuild the lower unit as well as the the model type. soundsw like your engine is a GM small block 305 and the drive is most likely an Alpha 2 series because of the year. this book should help you tremendously .
