You mean "stator ". and "rectifier " and possibly, "voltage regulator " although not all outboards are equipped with a regulator. Set your multimeter on "DCV " or 'DC volts ". Engine not running, all accessories off, touch the red probe to the positive (+ ) battery terminal and the black probe to the negative (-) battery terminal. Note the reading (a fully charged battery measures at least 12.65 volts.) Start the engine. The voltage should now be higher than it was with the engine off. Voltage should rise with RPMs. If your motor has a voltage regulator, it should not go above 14, maybe 14.5 volts. Any other result, your charging system is faulty. Most likely culprit: rectifier. Most common cause of rectifier failure: disconnecting the battery while the motor's running, or loose/ corroded battery terminals. |
