Soak them in salt and scrub them with shells and sow the seeds from the sails in the South Seas secretly then set them sure in the shrouds by the shore on Saturday or Sunday, Sir. -|--) ... If you mean little ornamental model boats, just use warm soapy water and a soft cloth (so long as they are not paper). Leave them on the little boats while you do it. Don't immerse the whole model. Just apply the cloth to the sails individually. The woodwork will be fine.

Old sails were made of cotton, but probably not yours. Dacron is durable and came next. Mylar, kevlar, and a mix or blend came next. What are you trying to do with these sails? What is the 'dirt' and stain from? Grease? Oil? What? That is the better question and then you can figure the solvent appropriate and what soaps next to remove the solvents. Good luck!

Put the sails i n the bath with a standard detergent and soak them. if they are not kevlar or mylar, ie a traditional material, you can tread the sails in the water. rinse and dry
