BOATING Q & A

How do i remove the cylinders (hubs?) attached to the axle of my boat's trailer?

Question: How do i remove the cylinders (hubs?) attached to the axle of my boat's trailer?

I want to adjust and possibly remove the bearings in my boat's trailer but the axle has 2 long cylinders to keep grease inside I suppose and I don't know how to remove them. They are around 3 " to 4 " long. I saw a video about this maintenance in you tube but It shows how to remove the short caps not these long ones.

If there is a zerk fitting in the center, this is some type "bearing buddy ". To remove tap on either side at the outer end alternating from side to side. You should use a mallet, but a piece of wood will also work. As you 'rock it back and forth it will come out. To reinstall line it up straight and drive in at center of the end.

Remove the grease cap, Behind this cap is a large nut (might have to remove some grease to find it ) Going threw this nut is a carter pin.. Straighten out the pin and remove it from the nut. Remove the nut and slide your hub part way off..then slide it back on exposing the front bearing. Remove the front bearing from the spindle. Then remove the hub. The rear bearing may be exposed, or it could be pressed into the hub.

You are referring to bearing protectors? do they have a zirk (grease gun fitting) in the middle? if so, they are an "interference fit ", meaning they fit so tightly that friction alone holds 'em in place. get a rubber mallet and give it a few good whacks, it'll start coming off, just keep whacking it from different angles until it falls off, don't worry the rubber mallet won't hurt it. That will get you to where the video starts.
