BOATING Q & A

What is the name of the line drawn on a boat for insurance purposed?

Question: What is the name of the line drawn on a boat for insurance purposed?

Years ago I learned about an old law somewhere in Europe that dealt with how full a boat could legally be filled. Previous to the law about the line, ship owners would fill a boat too full and then over- insure the ship's cargo. Inevitably the boat would sink somewhere out to see. Eventually they developed a law and a line was painted on all ships. Harbor people would make sure that boats were only filled full enough that the ship's line was still above water. What was that line, or law, called?! Thanks! JayJay, you rock! Thank you so much!
