BOATING Q & A

Is a 45 gallon gas tank compartment(on a boat) suppost to fill up with water when the bilge does?

Question: Is a 45 gallon gas tank compartment(on a boat) suppost to fill up with water when the bilge does?

I keep getting water in my fuel, i pulled the tank and filled the bilge and noticed water coming into the tank compartment? so i guess the tank becomes submerged in water and it gets in threw a hose or fuel gauge if not, will fibreglass patch (kitty hair) work to repair the crack or hole in the wall of the bilge? the hole in the bilge wall going to the tank compartment is suppost to be there as there is a channel at the bottom for water and a hole at the front of the compartment for water to get to the bilge.

All tank cells are sealed so gas can't leak into the bilge so seal where it coming in from but most times it's the inspection plate and sending unit gasket if needed. Look close at the tank for pit marks as 1 may be leaking water into the tank.

If you're getting enough water to submerge your fuel tank, you need to repair the leak in the hull *and* fix your bilge pump, preferably before the boat sinks. most boats have compartments designed as "dry stowage ", two, maybe three, and the fuel tank compartment is *not* one of them.
