Force outboards are o.k., but not heavy enough for reliability in strong winds. (Rats, thought there was one good thing about them for a moment..........) A rock. A big one is better. Drogue - often called a sea anchor. That slows you down and keeps the head to the wind, but it doesn't stop you. Anything dragged on a line will help as a last resort.

Most "experienced " voyagers have three anchors. Often when anchoring over night (especially in a crowded area or anchorage, two anchors will be used to prevent your vessel from swinging around with each change of wind direction. A third anchor is usually used for back-up, and for emergencies in case one anchor is lost. So, an "emergency " anchor is not a "special kind " of anchor. It can be a Danforth, a Plow, a Kedge, a Grapnel, or any other kind of anchor. It is just an additional spare, or back-up anchor of any kind that would generally only be used for emergencies. According to boat ed, any anchor that is carried on board your boat can be used as an emergency anchor. boat-ed.com/ fl/ course/ p3-8_anchoring.htm this could be a bruce anchor, claw anchor, danforth type anchor, cqr plow anchor, navy anchor, grapnel anchor etc. there are also sea anchors that are used to slow a boat at sea, or to hold the bow of a boat bow to the wind and waves. the two main types of sea anchors are para sail and cone shape. here is a good site that describe a sailboat surviving in 50+ knots of wind hove to wit a parachute anchor deployed sea-anchors.com/ sail.htm hope this helps hope this helps

Gee seattles, isn't that exactly what the other guy said 8 hours before you? Besides, a 'para-sail sea anchor' is really not an anchor, and we all know that.
